SAN ANTONIO, TX – San Antonio FC picked up an important point as they fought to a 1-1 draw with the Tampa Bay Rowdies Saturday evening in front of 7,043 fans at Toyota Field.

The result was crucial to San Antonio’s hopes of clinching a home playoff match, the point ensures still keep that goal in tact. With the top four seeds hosting a playoff match, SAFC knew this was one loss they could not afford to have.

“We said this in March, every point is very valuable in the league, because when it comes to this point of the season, those points are impactful,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “Sometimes you get a draw and you feel like it’s a point earned in the end, sometimes you draw and you feel like it’s a couple of points lost.”

Tampa Bay opened the scoring in the 69th minute when Walter Restrepo found Georgi Hristov at the top of the box, beating SAFC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo to put the visitors up a goal.

With his club down a goal, Powell opted to put in Ever Guzman in place of Cesar Elizondo. The move paid off as Guzman finished off a pass from Billy Forbes to level the match 1-1 and preserve a huge point for San Antonio.

“It shows our fight,” SAFC Defender Greg Cochrane said of the late goal. “We’re getting close to playoffs now…it just shows we’re going to fight down to the last whistle.”

“It was good that we battled back even though there was only a couple minutes left, I don’t think we ever really panicked. We have a bunch of experienced guys that know all it takes is one chance.”

  • Match notes: The 7,043 fans at Toyota Field on Saturday helped the club get over the 100,000 (100,740) fan mark on the season. Forbes’ assist on Guzman’s goal was his seventh assist, leading SAFC in that category.

Up next: San Antonio FC is now 15-4-11 and totaling 56 points on the season. The club will return to action on Wednesday when they welcome the Portland Timbers 2 to Toyota Field in a match that was postponed earlier in the season.
