SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC earned a 1-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps 2 in front of 6,037 fans at Toyota Field on Wednesday night to open a two-game home stand.
The win got SAFC back on track as they earned their first win in the month of August and had just one win in their last eight matches coming into the match on Wednesday night. San Antonio knew what was at stake and how important the two home matches are to grab wins before hitting the road for a month.
“We’ve been probing and trying different things, and the guys who came in tonight did a wonderful job,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “The good thing tonight was that we created several opportunities. You just want to maintain your focus and this is one of the times where you hope you can hit the back of the net on a more regular basis.”
San Antonio took the lead for good in the 14th minute when Greg Cochrane sent in a cross and Kris Tyrpak headed it home to put the home side up by a goal. Tyrpak now has six goals on the 2017 season, tying Billy Forbes for the team lead.
SAFC kept Vancouver off the scoreboard, marking their 13th shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo got his tenth clean sheet of the season, making him three shutouts away from making USL history.
The win brought San Antonio’s ‘magic number’ to 17 points, which equals to around six wins. The victory brings SAFC just seven points within Real Monarchs SLC, who are first in the Western Conference table.
- Match notes: San Antonio FC is now unbeaten at home in the 2017 season, going 6-0-6. SAFC put up their 13th clean sheet of the season, the most in the USL. Kris Tyrpak scored his sixth goal of the season and third in six games.
Up next: San Antonio FC is now 12-2-9 (45 points) on the season and will return to the pitch on Saturday when they welcome Portland Timbers 2 to Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m.
